Pharoah Sanders - Pharoah

8.0 – USA – 1977

A somewhat fusion-y outing for the Pharoah on this one. Opener “Harvest Time” is brilliant and finds Sanders in a somewhat mellow mood with just a gently-phased electric guitar and bass backing his spirited sax playing (some Eastern-sounding harmonium drones emerge later in the track to great effect). The second track, “Love Will Find A Way” starts out as a kinda-cringey almost-disco tune, but once it gets instrumental and the Pharoah blasts his horn, it gets quite awesome indeed, though guitarist Muñoz’s solo is far too mannered and unimaginative (most likely suffering in comparison to Sanders’ incredible sax-playing). He was better on the first track when he just laid in the background, but whatever.
